Snow Day part 2

22:09 Apr 11 2010
Times Read: 556

The last of the small fire burned out with a small fizzle, just loud enough to wake him from his dreamless slumber. All around him the wolves gazed upon their prey in silent awe as the moonlight howled, surrounding him with a deafening sense of fear and filling them with a beckoning blood lust. He closed his eyes tight hoping that if he did not see them surrounding him that they would not be there. Moments later his nose was filled with the scent of honeysuckle hanging heavily in the air. His ears with the sounds of the robins and blue jays chirping around him wafting in on a warm breeze he smirked knowing his prayers had been answered and he was once again in a safe and secure place. The renewed sense of hope filled him with such joy that he barely noticed the noise at first. After a few seconds there were no more birds nor breeze only the sound of a series of low growls and the hair on the back of his neck standing straight up. Slowly he raised his head and opened his eyes revealing that his body was still surrounded by the predators. They had a calm sense about them as if they were staring him down sizing him up. The moonlight glinted off their teeth and danced in their hollow eyes. The low sound of their growls sending chills up and down his spine. He forced himself to his knees bowing his head and screaming for salvation from these forces that were tearing the last shreds of his sanity to pieces. Suddenly as if his prayers had been answered a single loud shot sounded ringing in his ears loudly. This was quickly followed by the sound of scurrying paws which was replaced soon by footsteps crunching snow. He once again raised his head. Through the lightly wafting smoke he saw the shadowed figure again headed for him. As he took the outstretched hand he looked down at the red snow that was surrounding him. At this moment he was very well aware that the shot had not been to drive off his would be attackers to save him but instead, as the blood spewed from his left leg, he realized that this would be the last time he would be able to try to escape...
